Learning a language goes beyond vocabulary and grammar at The Grange Institution (TGI). Through authentic language experiences, students build the confidence to communicate across cultures, develop an appreciation of different perspectives and grow as globally minded learners.
This commitment to global citizenship was reflected in the achievements of two TGI students, Anokhi Ashwin (Year 3) and Milana Pillay (Year 4), who represented the school at the 6th Chinese Show for Foreign Primary School Students, organised by the Crestar Confucius Institute.
Developing Confidence Through Language
The competition’s initial stages required participants to deliver a self-introduction in Chinese and showcase a talent performance. Students who advanced to the Singapore Regional Finals faced additional challenges, including speech presentations, recitations and cultural knowledge quizzes.
Both Anokhi and Milana were selected as two of just 12 finalists for the Regional Finals. As non-native Chinese speakers, they demonstrated commendable resilience and a willingness to step outside their comfort zones as they put their language skills to the test.
Nurturing Globally Minded Learners
Their efforts were recognised with Anokhi receiving the Excellent Award through a Chinese song performance, and Milana receiving a Participation Award for her confidence and willingness to participate.
Beyond the competition, their achievements reflect TGI’s vision of nurturing life-ready global citizens through our language programme. As part of an international learning community comprising students of different nationalities, students have opportunities to develop cultural understanding and a deeper appreciation for the diverse world around them.
