The Grange Institution Celebrates First Math Olympiad Success on the International Stage

Key takeaways
  • The Grange Institution marked its first international mathematics competition success with four students earning medals and honours at SASMO 2026.
  • SASMO is a prestigious Asian maths contest, testing reasoning, strategy, and problem-solving among over 65,000 participants from 8,000+ schools.
  • TGI's integration of Singapore Math heuristics and a Stretch Math group underpinned strong student performance and validated the school's teaching approach.

The Grange Institution (TGI) is proud to celebrate a special academic milestone. Four of our students achieved encouraging results in the Singapore Asian Schools Mathematics Olympiad (SASMO) 2026.

This marks our first participation in an international mathematics competition at this level.

Our SASMO 2026 Achievers

We congratulate the following students for their outstanding performance:

  • Year 3, Anokhi Ashwin – Bronze Medallist
  • Year 3, Kabir Kohli – Honorable Mention
  • Year 3, Ko Yashiro – Honorable Mention
  • Year 4, Illias Suradji – Honorable Mention

Their results reflect persistence, confidence, and strong mathematical thinking.

What Is SASMO?

SASMO, or the Singapore Asian Schools Mathematics Olympiad, is one of the largest mathematics competitions in Asia.

In 2026, the competition saw:

  • Over 65,000 student participants
  • Representation from more than 8,000 schools
  • Participation across multiple countries in Asia and beyond

SASMO challenges students to think beyond routine classroom questions. Success in this competition is tied to reasoning, strategy, and structured problem‑solving.

Working with 3d structures help students understand spatial reasoning and geometry, improving their reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Why This Achievement Matters to The Grange Institution

In the second half of 2025, The Grange begun integrating Singapore Math heuristics to enhance our Cambridge Math programme. These strategies include visual models, systematic reasoning, and reflection. At the same time, we piloted a “Stretch Math” group for advanced learners.

This initiative supports students who benefit from deeper challenge and faster pacing. SASMO provided a meaningful external benchmark. It validated both our instructional approach and our students’ readiness.

Math brought to life outdoors as students explore number patterns and sequencing through active play.

Developing Confident Mathematical Thinkers

At The Grange Institution, mathematics is not about speed alone. It is about thinking clearly and applying ideas with confidence.

We encourage students to:

  • Explore different solution pathways
  • Explain their reasoning
  • Learn from mistakes
  • Build resilience through challenge

These habits support long‑term academic success. We are proud of our students. Their efforts reflect the values and academic vision of The Grange Institution.
